Here’s what happened …

Several months ago, I joined the physician-only network at Sermo.com. In my first week as a member, I read a post where a very popular member of the community described a vivid fantasy of using a nail gun on a “malingering” patient. The title of the post was, “My Ideal Office Fantasy”.

Part Time Doctor beats Full Time Burnout

One of the most common stressors of docs in our so-called health care “system” is the sheer toxicity of full time hours. While most of the rest of the world considers full time to be 40 hours a week. We all know a full time doc starts at 80 plus … if you include all the hours you must be available on call.

Death with Dignity in a Busy Emergency Room

In our modern hospital environment, death with dignity can be difficult to accomplish. So often the conversations that would lead to a death with dignity are missed or avoided — with tragic consequences.

Here is a story from my own personal experience of a death with dignity in the midst of a busy Emergency room … a setting where death with dignity is the very last thing on most people’s mind.

Medical Career Overwhelm?
Here’s Step #1 to Take Your Life Back

When it comes to Having A Life
You have a Blind Spot

The funny thing about blind spots is you don’t know you have them … that is why they are called “Blind Spots”. This one is shared by virtually 100% of the physicians I have met … and many others who have chosen a medical career. This particular blind spot is a direct result of the conditioning of medical school and residency.

As a result of this blind spot …You don’t know where you are going
And you aren’t the one driving the bus
[...who is that clown anyway?]

Healthcare Social Media is a Waste of Time (or worse) for Most Physicians

Healthcare Social Media is all the rage these days. You can’t visit even one physician-oriented website without someone breathlessly advising you to be on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube … and now Pinterest. Yet the only reason these talking heads can give you is, “because they are really popular and everyone is doing it.”

Physician Burnout – the Three Symptoms, Three Phases and Three Cures

Posted by Dike Drummond MD

Physician Burnout: Are YOU in the Danger Zone and What You Can DO about it.

In this article let me show you three key concepts:

  • A way to understand the difference between stress and burnout
  • A method to see if you are at risk for - or suffering from - physician burnout
  • Three distinct methods to reverse and prevent physician burnout.

In my work with physician burnout and stress … I have come to the conclusion that our current Healthcare “System” (I use that term VERY loosely) is TOXIC to the Workers. There are exceptions to this trend … an occasional group or practice that believes in and supports physician wellness … and these are the classic “exception that prove the rule”.

Medical Innovations for the Real World: The Universal Anesthesia Machine

Medical Innovations for the Real World – the Universal Anesthesia Machine

What happens when you take a $75,000 anesthesia machine from a hospital in the developed world and drop it in a 3rd world hospital that suffers an average of 16 power outages a month and has no spare parts?

What seems like a really cool charitable donation to a needy 3rd world country is not only useless … is downright dangerous. It is NOT GOOD when your anesthesia machine stops working while your belly is wide open. The machines break down and end up in a back room of the  hospital in a First World Medical Technology Graveyard.
