Physicians Unchained: Retirement Mastery for Doctors – Weekly Tip

Hindsight is always 20/20 - so use
the Future Retrospectoscope
to help design your Life After Medicine

In this episode, we’re going to talk about how you can be certain—more certain—that the steps that you’re taking to build your life after medicine are the right path to be on.

Re-Engineering Hindsight

And what I’d like to do is re-engineer, reverse engineer, a concept that we hear all the time, and it’s “hindsight is always 20/20,” right?

You always know on the far side of some life passage or some transformation or some change in your life, on the far side, you can look back and tell the mistakes that you made and the places where you could have made different choices.

But right now, what we’re talking about is stepping away from your practice forward into what you will create for your life after medicine, and things are a bit uncertain.

You’re not sure whether to turn left or right, say yes or no.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could actually position yourself in the future when all of this is taking place so you could use your hindsight?

The FUTURE Retrospectoscope

I’ve also heard that referred to as a retrospectoscope.

The retrospective scope is always 20/20.

What if you could position a retrospective scope in your future?

Well, you can do that.

I call it the future retrospective scope.

Okay, the future retrospective scope—the way you do that is with a quick thought experiment.

And what I want you to know is this level of input is available for you at any time.

It’s especially valuable when you’re stepping into your life after medicine.

The Thought Experiment

Here’s how it looks, and you can do it right now, wherever you are in the retirement continuum—thinking about it, avoiding it, eligible for it, but haven’t taken it, taken it but you’re not happy—wherever you are.

Okay.

Imagine it’s ten years into the future.

Imagine that it’s 2036 and you are talking to your 2036 self, who has the ability to look back over the ten years between now and 2026.

And where your future self is standing in 2036, do you imagine that your future self has some advice for you?

It’s not that hard of a leap to take.

Advice From Your Future Self

Imagine you’re talking to yourself ten years in the future.

What advice would your future self give you today about your retirement decision, your life after medicine, about what choices to make going forward?

And I find it fairly easy to feel what is coming from the future myself.

And whenever I ask this question to coaching clients, which I ask all the time, they almost always have a very quick and positive answer.

A Hidden Source of Guidance

So one of the hidden sources of input as you make the decision to step away from your practice, to enter into the retirement transition, and as you begin to plan your life after medicine—one of the sources of feedback, sources of input—is your future self.

Use the future retrospective scope.

And it’s a flexible thing, like a slide trombone, right?

What would me a year from now say?
What would me ten years from now say?

And you’ll get different forms of input.

How the Answer Arrives

Open all your channels.

You might hear it as a voice in your head.
It might come to you as an idea.
You might feel it in your body.

The future retrospective scope is always available to you.

The Question

Here’s the question for today, with regards to your retirement, your life after medicine:

Ten years from now, what does your future self want you to know right now?

Take a second to think about that.

Write it down in your diary and date it.

It could end up being one of the most important insights you have all year long.

Closing

If you’re not on the early bird list, there’s a sign-up sheet somewhere on the page where you’re watching me right now.

Go ahead and sign up.

You’ll get weekly lessons like this and be one of the first to know when the book’s available later in the first quarter.

That’s it for now.

Keep being the light worker that you are.

Know that your future self is always in your back pocket.

Just project yourself out and have that conversation.

That’s it for today.

Have a great rest of your day.
